Around that time, St. Mary's Health System decided that it’s employed group of physicians in Community Clinical Services, Inc. could better serve the community by joining forces with other independent physicians and providers in the community to provide quality, coordinated care to our patients.
St. Mary's Maine Covenant includes not only physicians who sign the Affiliation Agreement, but also St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, St. Mary's d’Youville Pavilion, Community Clinical Services, St. Mary's WorkMed, and St. Mary's Health System.
St. Mary's Health System, representing St. Mary's Maine Covenant members, enters into various risk sharing and non-risk sharing contracts with managed care corporations. As a member of St. Mary's Maine Covenant, you will automatically be entered into the risk sharing contracts as they come into play.
For non-risk agreements, like Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO), Maine Covenant will negotiate a contract, but using the “Messenger Model”, each provider may accept or reject the rates that are proposed. Whenever these contracts are negotiated, you will receive a letter from us asking your position. There is no requirement to participate in “Messenger Model” contracts. In order to be in the contract, you must sign the letter and return it. The “Messenger Model” must be utilized for non-risk type agreements to ensure against any possible antitrust issues.
Our clinical initiatives have included the C-section rate reduction project, the major depression management project, the acute low-back pain project, the physician prescribing practices project, osteoporosis screening, as well as other initiatives concerned with wellness and prevention. The commitment to clinical value evidenced by these projects is positioning St. Mary's Maine Covenant providers to be the preferred network in Central Maine.
