How does my student access the SBHC?

To receive services, the student must be enrolled in the SBHC by having a parent or guardian complete an enrollment form. Enrollment is free. The enrollment form provides information about the student, such as health conditions, medications, allergies, contact information for parents, the student’s PCP and hospital preference, and family health history. Once the enrollment form is completed, students may access the health center and discuss their needs. If the need is not urgent, an appointment will be set up during a free period if at all possible. Staff from the SBHC communicate with a parent after the visit is complete. Records from visits are sent to the student’s PCP.

Who pays for the services my student receives?

The goal of the SBHC is to provide needed services for the student regardless of ability to pay. The SBHC accepts all private insurances as well as MaineCare. Parents are not charged any co-pays. Because we are a Federally Qualified Health Center, we can offer families without insurance services based on a sliding-fee scale determined by household income. Staff can help the family make the appropriate contacts to explore this option. Funding for the SBHCs is also received from the State of Maine – DHHS-CDC, Safe Schools/Healthy Students Program, schools, philanthropic giving, and St. Mary’s Health System. 

The SBHC does not bill insurances for sports screens. There is a fee of $25, which must be received prior to the appointment for the sports screen. Because we know time may be of the essence, SBHC staff will make every effort to complete the sport screen in time for the student to participate in the chosen activity.
