What is the Continence Clinic?

The Continence Clinic provides therapy for men and women with urinary incontinence. A holistic approach to treatment is used with a focus on exercise and lifestyle modification.

What can I expect?

In a private treatment room, your therapist begins by completing an evaluation; taking a thorough history and description of your problem. In addition, pelvic muscle contractions and function are assessed through use of a biofeedback device. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of your biofeedback sensors. You may be subject to a one-time fee if your insurance does not cover the cost.  Please ask your therapist for details.

Treatment begins immediately after the evaluation. You will be instructed in:

  • basic components of continence
  • lifestyle changes
  • relaxation and breathing techniques
  • pelvic muscle exercises

Biofeedback displays pelvic muscle activity on a computer screen and is used in treatment to guide pelvic muscle exercises. Treatment also includes monitoring urinary function through the completion of a “bladder diary.”

The biofeedback tool requires you to insert a small sensor into the vagina (women) or anus (men). You will insert the sensor, so you can remain fully clothed once the sensor is in place.

Does it Work?

If you who participate fully in the program recommended by your therapist, you may notice the following results:

  • full continence,
  • decreased urinary leakage,
  • decreased use of incontinence pads,
  • decreased frequency of day and night toileting, and
  • decreased feelings of urgency.

Individual results will vary, depending on your level of individual compliance, and the underlying structural, muscular, and neurological components of your problem.
