The Renaissance School is approved as a Special Purpose Private School by the Maine Department of Education, and a Children's Behavioral Health Day Treatment program by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. It is accredited by The Joint Commission.
The Renaissance School is a confidential, coeducational, nonreligious setting serving children in grades K-8. It is a small and intensive treatment and educational setting for children who are not currently able to be safely or adequately served within their local school department.
The School provides a therapeutic and safe milieu in which all other interventions and supports occur. It is able to manage and treat many difficult behaviors, reducing the need for children to be sent home early or suspended/ expelled.
Clinical services occur daily through group and individual therapy, as well as directly in the life-space. These are provided by Clinicians who are masters- level social workers and mental health counselors, as well as bachelors-level Behavioral Health Professionals who are constantly available to the children during the school day. Services are guided by an Individual Treatment Plan. Crisis intervention is available as needed.
Educational services are provided by certified Special Education Teachers with assistance from Educational Technicians. Services are guided by a child's Individualized Educational Plan. The school follows the Lewiston Public School curriculum and calendar, and is in compliance with the Common Core standards. There are separate Middle School and elementary classrooms.
Medical services are overseen by a child psychiatrist, and provided by a psychiatric nurse. Children who need assessment for medication or currently have a medication regimen may choose to receive psychiatric services from the medical director.
Additional services provided within the program include Occupational therapy and Speech therapy based on the child's needs. Other services available at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center are easily accessed through our system.
To qualify for admission the child must have identified emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs that will be assessed during the referral process. It is not a requirement that a child have cognitive/intellectual issues or learning disabilities, though those can be easily supported. The School assesses the child's overall individual needs. It cannot serve children who are nonverbal or developmentally delayed or intellectually impaired below the moderate level. The program has experience treating many different issues, including diagnoses such as Mood Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum/ Asperger's Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Major Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Impulse Control Disorders, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Learning Disorders.
The School's catchment area is limited only by realistic transportation availability and the child's ability to tolerate. Children have historically come from Androscoggin, Oxford, Cumberland, and Franklin counties. Auburn Public Schools and Lewiston Public Schools have standing contract arrangements. Other school districts making placements here are, or have included, SAD 52, SAD 10, SAD 44, SAD 17, SAD 58, SAD 73, Lisbon School Department, RSU 4, RSU 5, RSU 9, and RSU 10.
The School offers three Program Services:
Section 65 Day Treatment follows the school year. Admissions can be made at any time, and length of stay in the School is individualized to the child's needs.
Supervised Tutoring provides educational support for students who are in transition or are temporarily out of school. It is provided at our site by 1:1 staff who have clinical and educational oversight, and other staff support available as needed.
Extended School Year is available to all Day Treatment students, and can also be provided to children whose local school departments do not have summer programming. This is a five week summer program occurring at the school. It provides all day treatment services and activities for children who are best served with structured programming in the summer.
Step-down, Transitional and Diagnostic programs can be arranged on an individualized basis.
Services are typically paid for by the sending school department and the child's public or private health insurance. Please inquire.
