Venous Care Center
People with chronic venous disease can access specialists to treat their symptoms. The Venous Care Center follows a team approach in providing and managing care, including followup with patients to be certain that treatment is achieving expected results.
We're proud to say that the Venous Care Center provides more than just a cosmetic level of care. That's because our medical staff brings surgical, radiological, and medical skills to the treatment of chronic swelling in the legs, enlarged veins, and poorly healing leg wounds. This service offers comprehensive care in the management of all aspects of venous disease, from the lifelong care of this problem, through management of any complications. The St. Mary's Venous Care Center is the only program of it's kind in Maine.Symptoms
Key symptoms treated by the Venous Care Center include:
- Chronic swelling of legs
- Leg pain or itching
- Poorly healing leg wounds
- Enlarged (unsightly) veins
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
EVLT is a quick, minimally invasive laser procedure that leaves no scars, has a short and relatively pain-free postoperative recovery period, and is performed under local anesthesia in the Venous Care Center. An EVLT consult may be appropriate for patients who have symptoms related to incompetent veins.
Through Ultrasound Imaging guidance, this method uses a tiny needle placed into a vein, which supplies varicose veins. Liquid (sclerosant) is infused, which scars the vein closed.
Venous Care Consult
A consult is appropriate for any individual experiencing chronic swelling of the legs, poorly healing leg wounds, leg pain, or unsightly, incompetent, or enlarged veins.
Requests for any of these services are accepted on the order of a physician and the patient's request. As part of the consult, a complete history, physical, interview, and ultrasound Doppler with venous mapping will be ordered and performed. Referrals are accepted by either phone call or fax. The physician's office should fax the venous consult order, and Center staff will arrange for all the rest.
