This practice treats both pulmonary and sleep issues.

Pulmonary medicine and pulmonologists deal with the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs.

This includes many diseases and conditions, such as:

• ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome)
• asthma
• COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
• cystic fibrosis
• interstitial lung disease
• lung cancer
• lung transplants
• occupational lung disease
• pulmonary hypertension
• pulmonary tuberculosis
• sarcoidosis of the lungs
• SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)

Pulmonary medicine is also sometimes called pulmonology.

Pulmonologists also treat sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.  This is because common causes of poor sleep involve breathing, the lungs and respiratory system.  St. Mary’s Pulmonary Associates are proud to be affiliated with St. Mary’s Center for Sleep Disorders, which is located on the hospital’s Auburn Medical Building campus.
