Endometrial Ablation
Relief From Heavy Periods
Heavy menstrual bleeding can be a problem for many women, and hysterectomies used to be the only answer. A new, less radical approach, removes the uterine lining and eliminates the need for a hysterectomy. Called endometrial ablation, it is used when other treatments have either failed or are undesirable.
This procedure might be appropriate for you if you limit activity due to menstrual periods, or if bleeding causes you to be anemic and tired.
Advantages of Endometrial Ablation Include:
-
Outpatient procedure - NO hospital stay
-
Fast recovery, with a return to normal activity within a few days
-
Usually a complete absence or marked decrease in menstrual bleeding
-
Safe, simple, and effective procedure
St. Mary's Regional Medical Center offers an electrocautery method of endometrial ablation, performed under anesthesia in the operating room through a hysteroscope. Approximately 90 percent of women experience relief of their symptoms within the first few months.
