that the Speech-Language Pathology Department at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center is staffed, Monday, Thursday, and Friday, to meet the swallowing and communication needs of all appropriate inpatients and outpatients. Clinicians are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of communication disorders as well as the assessment and treatment of swallowing and cognition disorders.
Department policy includes a response to a referral within 48 hours on weekdays and the immediate implementation of therapy when indicated.
Call on Speech-Language Pathologist’s expertise when:
- A patient(s) is in the Emergency Department with a new stroke diagnosis, or when questioning swallow function in any patient…
- A patient in the ICU is extubated or tracheotomized and you are questioning swallow safety and cognitive function…
- A patient on any medical floor has a change in speech, language, cognitive or swallow function.

For Inpatients:
Write an order for "Speech Consult"
in the Physician Orders section of the hard chart.
For Outpatients:
Call in the referral to the outpatient speech therapy department
