Urogynecology
Treatment for Bladder, Uterus and Bowel Problems
What is a Urogynecologist?
A urogynecologist is a physician with special interest and expertise in problems such as:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (incontinence)
- Difficulty voiding and overactive bladder
- Prolapse (also known in the community as dropped bladder, fallen womb)
- Difficulty having a bowel movement
What kind of training does a Urogynecologist have?
Urogynecologists have completed their required 4 years of gynecologic or urologic residency after medical school. Following this training, these physicians have developed additional expertise in the evaluation and treatment of conditions that affect a woman's bladder, uterus, and bowels, often with additional fellowship training. This training has enabled a urogynecologist to offer the most up-to-date treatment options for these problems.
When should I see a Urogynecologist?
Although your primary care physician may have some knowledge about these problems, a urogynecologist can offer additional expertise. Specialized diagnostic tests may be needed for a complete and accurate diagnosis. These tests may include evaluation of bladder function and vaginal support.
History and Physical Exam
During your first visit to our office, the urogynecologist will discuss your family and personal history and will perform a physical exam geared to your medical diagnosis. Some tests may also be recommended.
Each of the following tests is available through Women’s Health Associates:
- Cystoscopy/Urethroscopy
- Ultrasound
- Urodynamic Testing
- Kidney studies such as ultrasound or CAT scan as appropriate
- Intravenous Pyelography (IVP)
- Electrodiagnostic Testing (EMG) or the Pelvic Floor
