The Adult Psychiatric Department at St. Mary's emphasizes individual intensive treatment of adults with mental illness. This inpatient program has a multi-disciplinary team which include psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, case workers, psychologists, behavioral technicians, recreational therapists and pastoral care workers who work together to create a program tailored to the individual's needs. Also available to the team is a full range of immediate medical support and emergency services to help diagnosis and treat medical ailments.


On adult psychiatry our team of experts determines the diagnosis of and intervention for each patient, monitors progress and works with the patient and family towards a meaningful discharge. The goal for our patients is to achieve the desired change in their behavior, general health and interpersonal relationships.


Admission Criteria

The Adult Psychiatric Department at St. Mary's has a 31-bed capacity for voluntary and involuntary patients. Referral calls for admission are taken by our Intake Department whose team includes psychiatric nurses and case workers. The information gathered in these referral calls is then presented to the psychiatrist on call for review and determination of appropriateness warranting an acute inpatient psychiatric admission.

A referral may be given by a psychiatric mental health professional who has seen the patient within 24 hours and has pertinent clinical and demographic information to present.
