The
B Street Health Center is a full-service family medicine
practice affiliated with Community Clinical Services. The practice
is located in the new Community Center building at 57 Birch Street
in Lewiston.
A family
physician offers primary care to an entire family regardless of
age or sex. Family physicians are coordinators of healthcare services
for patients. They may take care of children similarly to a pediatrician,
adults similarly to a specialist in internal medicine; they perform
some surgery and some deliver babies.

Maine
faces an extreme shortage of dentists and, of those practicing,
only a handful accept Medicaid as a form of payment. Eligible patients
often wait months or years for appointments. For patients without
insurance, dental care remains an unaffordable luxury.
The lack of affordable and accessible dental care for children in
Lewiston/Auburn is exacerbated by poverty levels in the downtown
area, where the B Street Health Center is located,
which are nearly 50 percent.
The
Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation recently awarded $25,000 to
the B Street Family Health Center to help construct and furnish
the new dental program.
"The
King Foundations support has enabled us to expand our dental treatment
and education programs, which focus on our underserved youth. The
children we've treated have been receptive to learning ways to help
keep their teeth healthy through daily brushing and flossing, and
the dental staff has enjoyed working with them and their parents,"
stated Amy Cronkhite, Dental Hygienist at the B Street Dental
Program.
Dental
Services are currently being offered for children 15-years-old and
younger who are patients of Community Clinical Services practices.
