I have my own doctor. Why should I sign my teen up for SBHC services? We are not here to replace your primary care provider (PCP). We are here because we believe that healthy students learn better. We work to support your PCP, offering convenience to you and your student. Sore throat? The student doesn't have to leave school to be seen. You don't have to leave home or work to take them in to be seen. Your doctor doesn't have to try to fit in a last-minute appointment. We can tell you if it's strep and needs antibiotics or is just a virus and will get better on its own. If we see your teen, we will let your PCP know about the visit unless you request that we don't. When your teen needs a sports physical, often there's at least a month until the next opening at a PCP's office. We can get students in for sports screens within a week, often the next day.

Does it cost anything to register for the SBHC at ELHS? It's free to sign up for services. When a student is actually seen, there are charges which are the same as at any Community Clinical Services practice. We accept MaineCare and most private insurances. If students don't have insurance, we can help them apply for MaineCare or FQHC services (see below). NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR INABILITY TO PAY.

What is FQHC? FQHC stands for federally-qualified health center. As part of Community Clinical Services, we can offer students services based on a sliding-fee scale determined by household income. If your family income is too high to qualify for MaineCare, you may still qualify for the lower FQHC rates.

When is the SBHC at ELHS open? We are open school days only. We try to schedule appointments during study halls, SSR, lunch or before or after school to avoid interfering with classes, but will see students during classes if time or the student's health condition make it necessary.

Are SBHC services confidential? All services at the SBHC at AMS are covered by The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). HIPAA is a means to protect the confidentiality of personally identifiable health information by restricting its release and safeguarding its security. We do not release any information without your permission. School personnel do not have access to your chart. Our records are kept apart from the school records.

How do I register for the SBHC at ELHS? There is paperwork to complete the registration process. We require signed parental consent for students to be seen at health center. Our enrollment form includes billing and emergency contact information, insurance information, release to allow us to share information with your primary care provider, permission to dispense over-the-counter medications, and health history. There is also a form explaining HIPAA which needs to be initialed and returned to the SBHC at ELHS. HIPAA protects patients' privacy.

Do I have to have my parent's permission to use the SBHC at ELHS? Maine law allows minors to seek health care without parental involvement for three reasons: mental health, substance abuse, and sexual/reproductive health care. While we encourage students to talk to their parent or guardian, we recognize that this is not always possible. At the SBHC at ELHS we allow students to sign their own consent for certain sexual/reproductive health services. These include pregnancy testing and counseling, testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, and counseling about birth control. We stress abstinence as the only sure way to avoid pregnancy and STIs. We do not dispense birth control or condoms at the SBHC at ELHS.
