St. Mary's Center for Joint Replacement is the State of Maine's only program dedicated to changing people's lives through the process of joint replacement. Led by one of the most experienced surgeons in Maine, a number of innovations in our Center ensure this surgery is convenient for you, your family and caregivers.

Overview Joint Orthopedic Center Services:

•  Patient and family-centered care experience

•  Regional /statewide scope

•  Brand new and attractive 16 bed inpatient unit designed to address patient

    and family needs

•  On-unit rehab gym designed to simulate home environment

•  On-unit nutrition and snack station for families

•  On-unit dedicated education room with internet access for patients and families

•  Dedicated nursing staff with joint replacement experience

•  All patient rooms will have wireless internet access; television and radio

•  Environmentally-friendly materials on unit; LEED Certified

•  Point of care services for lab, imaging and in-patient physical and occupational  

    therapy

•  Patient and family education regarding what to expect before, during and after their

    surgery

•  Patient specific follow-up care

•  Continuous communication with primary care physician

Educational Support Program

•  Begins in the physician 's office

•  Geared towards providing patients and their families with a comprehensive patient

    and specific educational plan

•  Reinforced during hospital stay and after discharge

•  Caregivers in the orthopedist 's office, all hospital areas and primary care offices all

    share access to same patient educational material and are part of a comprehensive

    patient and family-centered care process

Continuum of Care:

•  Care Coordinator coordinates and streamlines the patient/family surgical and rehab

    experience

•  Participates in a community prevention and wellness program

•  Pre-admission program includes screening for surgically appropriate (utilizing joint

    center criteria) and prior authorization for reimbursement.

•  Nutritional services available

•  Therapy services available

•  Home Care/Skilled Nursing, Acute Rehab or Long-Term Rehab Services available

Nursing Care:

A team of specially trained nurses will provide direct care and coordinate the care provided by the multidisciplinary team. Services include:

•  Self - care/health promotion education

•  Pain and symptom management

•  Intra-operative support

•  Medication management

•  Wound/incision care

•  Preventative care

Rehabilitation Services:

Multidisciplinary team of physicians, physical and occupational therapists, nurses and case managers help patients and their families following surgery. A full range of exercise and therapeutic equipment is available to help gain mobility and highest level of independence. A wellness model is utilized. Patients will be expected to dress in street clothes (comfortable clothing versus “johnnies”) and perform activities of daily living with minimal assistance. Opportunities for recreation and diversion will be available on the unit.

Nutritional Services:

Registered dietitians are available to help patients lose weight or alter their eating in order to ensure a successful recovery from surgery. Assessments and counseling sessions are offered on an individual basis to patients and their families both pre and post operatively. As part of the community education (prevention and wellness) component, nutrition and weight loss will be connected to joint preservation.
