Neuro-Navigational Surgery

St. Mary's Regional Medical Center has the only computerized neuro-navigational system for both spine and brain available in New England. By using three-dimensional images and infrared intraoperative guidance, surgeons at St. Mary's are guided through the brain and spine to within millimeters of the target.

Stealth offers two advantages over traditional methods of neurosurgical techniques. Lesions in the brain can be dynamically localized, and, as a result, radical volumetric resections can be performed with less risk to the surrounding normal brain (visualized on the computer display during surgery).

This is of some significance in the treatment of malignant brain tumors since studies have shown that the extent of life is nearly doubled following resection and radiation therapy, when compared to radiation therapy and biopsy. Spinal instrumentation can be placed with a degree of accuracy previously unobtainable.
