Patients who are experiencing persistent,
long-term pain and who have pursued traditional treatment options
are eligible for treatment. Appropriate referrals are also available
for acute pain. Through a collaborative approach among neurosurgery,
neurology, anesthesiology orthopaedics, psychiatry and oncology,
a multimodal approach is utilized to manage pain from cancer, failed
back syndrome, post-herpetic neuralgia, headaches, fibromyalgia,
acute arthritis and other disorders.
Patients referred to the Chronic Pain Service
are initially evaluated by a psychiatrist, a neuropsychologist and
appropriate specialist. The case is then presented to the multi-disciplinary
pain service board where treatment strategies are developed. Where
appropriate, surgical treatments such as lumbar fusion, implantation
of dorsal column stimulators or intrathecal morphine pumps are available.
