Included in the Spine Service is
treatment for degenerative disk/spine disease, spinal instability,
spine trauma, spinal deformities and cancer. Expertise includes
anterior cervical plating for spinal instability, pedicle screw
fixation for lumbar instability, anterior plating for spinal fractures
and lateral transthoracic and retroperitoneal approaches to thoracic
lesions and posterior lumbar instrumentation and fusion for instability.
Spinal surgery continues to be a major focus
at St. Mary's. The acquisition of the "Stealth"
neuronavigation system has greatly enhanced our ability to accurately
place spinal instrumentation. Procedures for decompression and stabilization
include anterior and posterior approaches to the cervical/occipital
region, cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.
Due to the breadth of spine experience, St. Mary's
has been utilized as an introductory center and test site for the
"Stealth" system with regard to its spinal and cranial applications.
