What is A Chest Pain Center?

Alarm_ClockTime is muscle, and when you experience chest pain, visiting the nearest accredited Chest Pain Center can mean the difference between life and death.

Chest Pain Centers are specialized services with doctors, nurses, and other staff trained in diagnosing and treating chest pain.

The primary goal of a Chest Pain Center is to make sure that a hospital is able to meet or exceed the standards of care for patients being treated for acute coronary syndrome.

What is Acute Coronary Syndrome?

Acute coronary syndrome is the sudden, reduced flow of blood to the heart. The term is used to describe pain experienced in a variety of circumstances: during a heart attack, while at rest, or doing light physical activity (unstable angina).

It is treatable if diagnosed quickly and accredited Chest Pain Centers are the perfect locations for diagnosis and the start of treatment.  Treatments vary, depending on a person’s symptoms and health condition.

Is all Chest Pain related to Acute Coronary Syndrome?

No, but it can be a warning sign of a heart attack. Other heart attack symptoms may include:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pain, pressure, or a strange feeling in the jaw, back, shoulders or arms
  • Light-headedness or sudden weakness
  • A fast or irregular heartbeat

(If you experience these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.)

Other Causes of Chest Pain

There is a common fear that chest pain means heart attack. Chest pain can have many causes:

  • Exercise
  • Upper respiratory viruses
  • Shingles
  • Pain brought on by excessive coughing
  • Injuries to the rib cage
  • Pleurisy
  • Heartburn or GERD
  • Panic attacks

Given the many possible causes of chest pain, visiting an accredited Chest Pain Center is a good way to assure proper diagnosis and treatment.
