Patient Family-Centered Approach

blue-distinctionOur assessment process starts by listening to you and your family – what you currently experience and what you hope to achieve. Every step of the way we partner with you to get the best possible outcome.

The assessment takes into account your overall ability to tolerate the difficulties of joint replacement.  We look at existing limitations, determine the amount of degeneration that has occurred within the joint, and evaluate the degree of pain currently experienced.  With this information, we then have an honest conversation about surgical options, rehabilitation services, expected outcomes, and the length of time between surgery and maximum improvement of mobility and range of motion.

If joint replacement surgery is recommended, you will be encouraged to use St. Mary’s Center for Joint Replacement. As the only dedicated joint replacement center in Maine, the staff of physicians, nurses and therapists have detailed knowledge in how to care for patients recovering from joint replacement surgery.

The process begins with one of our orthopedic surgeons surgically removing the damaged portion of your joint and replacing it with an artificial joint. These technological marvels are what enable a person to quickly regain mobility. While your hospital stay may only be two-four days, recovery could take between 6 to 8 weeks. It may or may not be accompanied by a stay at a rehabilitation center, such as the St. Mary’s Rehab Center at d’Youville Pavilion.
