Consistent Assignment

St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion as part of membership in the Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes Campaign, offers consistent assignments.  That means that residents see the same caregivers almost every time they are on duty.

It has been shown that consistent assignment is a key step in meeting our goal of giving care that is centered around the resident.  It helps build strong relationships between residents, their families and the caregivers.  Also, research shows that nurses and nursing assistants who take care of the same residents are happier in their jobs and tend to stay in their jobs.

Some other reasons the residents like having the same caregivers are:  they don’t have to explain repeatedly how they like things done,  it is easier to become more comfortable with the intimate aspects of care and to feel more secure with caregivers that they know well.

Our staff like consistent assignments because they know what each resident wants and needs.

They are more likely to notice slight changes in health that can prevent more serious health problems in the future.  They are more likely to understand and respond to the behaviors of residents with dementia. This is important because residents with this condition often let others know what they want and need through their actions.

Having systems that help build relationships between people is part of the way we do things at St. Mary's d’Youville Pavilion.
