At St. Mary's Pulmonary Medicine and Infectious Disease, Dr. Sandra Harris cares for patients with a variety of illnesses derived from exposure to various transmissible or communicable diseases.
Infectious diseases manifest themselves on many levels. Transmissible or communicable (or contagious) diseases can carry viruses, bacteria, fungi, or parasites.
Transmissible means the organism can transmitted through physical contact, foods that are contaminated, bodily fluids, and inhalation. Contagious is something that is easily transmitted from an ill person to another through something as much as a sneeze - like the flu.
