School Based Health Centers

A Department of Community Clinical Services

What are the School Based Health Centers at AMS, ELHS, LMS and LHS?

The School Based Health Centers (SBHCs) help children succeed in school and in life by keeping them healthy and ready to learn.  We deliver quality health care to children and adolescents where they are, in school.  With a focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and indentifying illness early, we help prevent more serious illness later on.  We make health care available to many children who otherwise would not otherwise receive care.  L-A SBHCs are located in the high school and middle schools in Lewiston and Auburn.  We are operated by Community Clinical Services, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) affiliated with St. Mary’s Health System.  SBHC students are eligible for savings on brand-name prescription drugs through the 340B Prescription Drug Program.

Each SBHC is staffed by a nurse practitioner, a behavioral health clinician trained to assist with mental health or substance use issues, and an administrative clinical assistant (ACA).

We also provide behavioral health services at the Governor James B Longley Elementary School in Lewiston.

The mission statement of our School Based Health Centers is to provide timely, friendly, integrated, culturally competent and confidential access to high-quality comprehensive acute and preventative healthcare services that meet the unique needs of the school community while promoting lifelong healthy living and learning. Care should be based on assessed health status and needs as well as sounds school health policies, developed in collaboration with school nurses and staff, primary care and other healthcare providers in our community.

We participate in the Maine Assembly for School Based Health Care and meet their voluntary standards for SBHCs.  We are also guided by the School Based Health Alliance.
