Focus on Employee Health
Today, more than ever, we know the importance of acquiring and maintaining positive health habits. For most people, the choices we make regarding eating habits, exercise, alcohol/drug use, stress management and the like will ultimately make the difference with our current and future health. Employees in good health are less likely to injure themselves at work, will utilize medical benefits less often and will be more productive at work and at home! Today, an employer must learn ways to improve employee health, morale and productivity while holding the line on rising health care costs. St. Mary's Prevention and Wellness offers a range of programs tailored to meet employer needs. The following are examples of services offered to employers in the Central Maine region:

Your Prevention & Wellness Team
Ashley began working at St. Mary's in 2004 and joined the Prevention and Wellness team in 2007. She became a certified Lifeguard in 2014 and teaches Water Aerobics at Bates College as part of our HealthSteps program. Recently, in 2016 she became a certified Diabetes Prevention Program facilitator as well as a Tobacco Cessation Counselor.
JENNIFER A. SMITH, DHEd, MS
Coordinator of Health Promotion Services
Jennifer Smith earned her health education doctoral degree in May of 2017. She hold a master's degree in health promotion and exercise science, a bachelor's degree in sports medicine with a concentration in nutrition and a minor in education, and a certificate in the Fundamentals of Worksite Wellness. She is also a nationally certified personal trainer, group exercise instructor, speed coach, and tobacco cessation helper.
MARIA PETE, BS
Wellness Promotion Coordinator
Maria has a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and a passion for guiding individuals to live a healthier lifestyle by decreasing their risk of acute and chronic diseases. She manages St. Mary's health risk screening program, and provides health coaching, and tobacco cessation. She is a firm believer that "prevention is key!"

Healthsteps is proud to have instructors who are certifed, professional and caring. The program is unique and offers instructions in nursing, fitness, aquatics, nutrition, and personal training. Blood pressure and pulse checks are part of the class curriculum. Participants are educated about their health and wellness to help them achieve a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle.
